Certificates

AWAYTOC offers four levels of certificates for language teachers:

Level 1: Practical

This course gives foreign language teachers the fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical skills they need to follow a curriculum, prepare and follow lesson plans, manage classrooms, assess student language proficiency, and develop professionally as a language teacher. This course is offered intensively in six weeks, or at a slower pace for four months.

Level 2: Professional

The Professional Language Teaching program is designed to give new teachers the knowledge and skills necessary to create original lesson plans, handle diverse classroom management issues, and enter their professional community. Participants enter an apprenticeship for six to nine months, during which they work as lead teacher in several levels and skills of language courses and complete projects and readings assigned by their mentor. Participants are assigned positions as teaching staff and participate in meetings related to student, course, and school management.

Level 3: Mentor

The Mentor course is designed for experienced language teachers who would like to develop their ability to train other teachers, develop curricula and materials, and manage programs, and become established in their professional community. Students in this course participate actively on the teaching staff of a school or center while receiving personal assistance in leading seminars, apprenticing new teachers, and completing assigned readings and research. Mentor Language Teachers must also document their role in training other teachers to the Professional Language Teacher level. This program takes at least one full-time year beyond the Professional Language Teacher level.

Level 4: Master

The Master Language Teacher Program is a long-term apprenticeship designed to help strong teachers become leaders in their professional community. Participants in this program receive assistance in developing research projects for publication or professional presentation, developing and implementing curricula, managing educational programs, creating materials, and implementing programs of their own. It is open only to teachers who have already demonstrated a high level of professional ability and integrity. It usually takes two to three years beyond the Mentor Certificate.
