1. Foundations of Teaching Language
Study principles of applied linguistics and second-language acquisition, common methods of language teaching, lesson planning, and classroom management. 3 November – 10 December (Tues., Thurs. 9:00-11:00) or 15 March – 14 April (Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs. 15:30-17:00)
2. Foundations of Teaching EnglishLearn specifics principles and methods for teaching English speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, and grammar. 2 February – 18 March (Tues., Thurs. 9:00-11:00) or 19 April – 26 May (Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs. 15:30-17:00) 3. PracticumWork under the direction of a mentor to teach courses in the Bishkek area. The Practicum is open only to students who are recommended by their teachers in the Foundations courses. Dates vary, but the course usually lasts 4-6 weeks. How much work is required for the courses? Each of these courses involves approximately 30 hours of classroom instruction and 60 hours of individual or group work outside of class.
Who can take the courses?
The courses are open to native-English and non-native English speakers who have a strong desire to teach in Central Asia and who demonstrate high-intermediate or advanced skills in English. The courses require extensive reading and writing in English. Do the courses result in a certificate?
Students who successfully complete all three courses will receive a certificate from the U.S. company, A Way to Connect.
How much do the courses cost?
A Way to Connect charges $300 per course. Some scholarships are available through the Kyrgyz company Awaytoc. Please contact us for information.

Qualified applicants will then be interviewed by a panel of Awaytoc’s staff. Your application should include the following information: 1. A resume with your contact information. 2. Answers to the following questions: a. How did you hear about the Awaytoc program? Why do you think it would be helpful for you? b. What was the most difficult lesson that you ever learned? How did you learn it? c. Which part of teaching do you think will be most difficult for you? Why? d. What are the most important characteristics of a good teacher? Which of these traits are your strengths, and which are weaknesses? e. Why do you want to teach English in Central Asia?
