Mentor Language Teaching Program

Description: The Mentor course is designed for experienced language teachers who would like to develop their ability to train other teachers, develop curricula and materials, and manage programs, and become established in their professional community. Students in this course participate actively on the teaching staff of a school or center while receiving personal assistance in leading seminars, apprenticing new teachers, and completing assigned readings and research.

Time: Usually two years, including…

  1. 240 hours as lead teacher
  2. 5-10 hours of teaching in the presence of a mentor
  3. 10-15 hours of personal instruction and assessment by a mentor
  4. 120 hours of readings and research

Prerequisites:

  1. completion of the Professional Language course
  2. recommendation by the course teachers and mentors
  3. teaching six months as lead teacher in a course at the Professional level or the equivalent
  4. recommendation from colleagues
  5. recommendation from students
  6. demonstrate high-intermediate proficiency in oral and written skills in the target language
  7. demonstrate advanced competence in one of the following areas:
    1. curriculum development
    2. materials development
    3. assessment, teacher-training
    4. content-based or special-purpose language
    5. program administration
    6. research
